Meet Mahendra Singh

Mahendra Singh was born on 5 June 1979 into a large family in Rajasthan, the youngest of seven children. With four older brothers and two sisters, he grew up in a close-knit household where his love for nature was nurtured from an early age.

Birding runs in Mahendra’s family. Two of his brothers worked at Keoladeo National Park, and his grandfather served as a park ranger there. By the age of 12, Mahendra was already accompanying them into the park and building his knowledge of birds. He later became a member of the Bombay Natural History Society, joining experts in the field and refining his skills.

In 1996, he qualified as a licensed freelance guide for Keoladeo National Park. After two years, he moved to Central India, where he broadened his focus to include tigers and other wildlife. Over time, Mahendra developed into a versatile naturalist with an ability to inspire travelers. For nearly 20 years, he has led birding and wildlife tours across India, guiding countless groups to the country’s most remarkable species and landscapes.

In recent years, Mahendra has also fallen in love with Central Asia’s birdlife, especially the wide-open steppes and deserts of Kazakhstan. He greatly enjoys taking RBT clients into the field there, where the mix of stunning scenery and rare birds makes every trip memorable.

Married since 2001, Mahendra is supported by his wife and three children. Today he continues to thrive as a dedicated freelance tour leader, combining his deep knowledge of India’s birds with his enthusiasm for sharing new frontiers in Central Asia. His long experience, warm personality, and passion for discovery make him an invaluable part of the RBT team.
